A research and development (R&D) plant in Wirral is to receive
£3.5 million of investment.
US pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb will invest the money
in an expansion of its lab in Moreton which currently employs
around 100 staff.
The decision was made after senior representatives of the firm
visited the site.
Bristol-Myers Squibb's executive director of R&D Dr Peter
Timmins said that the "exceptional quality and availability of
skilled staff" was one of the key reasons for the investment.
He also recognised the area's academic credentials and the
support from development agencies, such as the Mersey Partnership
(TMP), Invest Wirral and the Northwest Regional Development Agency,
as important factors.
TMP chief executive Lorraine Rogers said: "Their investment in
Wirral is highly significant for Liverpool City Region's
biomedical sector.
"It will help to further build the city region's expertise
in this field and its reputation as a world class location for
research-intensive ventures."
Bristol-Myers Squibb has ten major R&D sites around the world.
Scientists at the Moreton site investigate new pharmaceuticals and
develop them to be taken to market.
